Student Comments:

About the Instructor: ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Mr. V was by far the best professor I have ever had at BU. I wish he taught regularly through the school year. He

is always enthusiastic, explains topics well, and has great models. I don’t think any other science teacher at BU

can match up to him. Great demos. Helpful in office hours. Improve: When doing problems in class, work was all over the place and

not clear—had to jump pages to find work.

Fantastic instructor. My favorite science professor I’ve ever had. Amazing at making even the most difficult or boring subjects interesting and fun. Absolutely hilarious. Won’t take physics if not with him. Improve: Just neater

handwriting.

Very good at explaining concepts. Friendly, fun, and interesting lecturer. Love the demos. Improve: Better handwriting and clearer pronunciation. I love Professor Voroshilov. His dry humor is a perfect cherry on top of this course. Presentations are organized. Enthusiastic about physics. Funny. Improve: Write clearer. Make sure students know what question you are

asking. Weirdly funny. Teaches clearly. Russian. Class got boring. Loved his in-class experiments. Improve: Encourage more participation. Organized slideshows and content. Many applicable demonstrations done in class. Office hours are useful and

convenient. Improve: A bit fast sometimes.

He is able to present a lot of questions that are likely to be present on the exam and he goes over it well. Improve: He just needs to speak a little louder sometimes. Very punctual and always uses the class time wisely. A very knowledgeable professor and makes learning

physics fun. Improve: Go a little slower on slides or finish some problems. Presentation of lecture material is very good. Humor keeps me interested. Mr. V is a great professor. Very enthusiastic about physics, which keeps students engaged. Demonstrations are

helpful. Improve: Sometimes handwriting is difficult to understand, but it is not detrimental. Truly helped during office hours. Improve: Go a little slower when doing examples. Awesome. Love the demonstrations. Improve: Try to improve handwriting (please). Provides great experiments and makes an intensive class enjoyable. Improve: Clearer writing and should spend

time finishing a problem that he has started rather than having us finish at home. I liked that he would randomly crack jokes here and there so subtly that sometimes the class or at least all of the

class didn’t catch it. Improve: There were sometimes when he wouldn’t solve out a problem till the very end and instead talks about it. It’s hard to follow when the steps aren’t clear either.

Very helpful.

Strong: Use of slides and good knowledge of the course. Improve: Handwriting is horrendous and it’s hard to

understand the notes on the slides.

Teaching is clear and concise. Examples on lecture slides are for homework. Demonstrations are cool and help cement concepts. Improve: Sometimes handwriting is a little hard to read. Great in extra help, very good teacher. Improve: There can be a language barrier at times but that is unavoidable. Good demonstrations and fair exams. Improve: Handwriting and clarity of answers. Strong: Lots of demonstrations and humor. I really enjoy his humor and enthusiasm. I like that he makes exams off of homework questions, helps a lot. Also,

very fair grader. Improve: Needs to write a bit better. Very funny and passionate about teaching. Improve: More problems in class that are relevant to the homework.

He’s very enthusiastic, which I like. Improve: There are many typo’s in the lecture slides and lab handouts.

Very effective at explaining concepts.

He is a master. He knows his materials. He wants to help. That’s all I can expect from a teacher. He is great.

Sometimes I have a hard time understanding him. The material in class is covered so quickly I can rarely understand it in class. His writing is not very clear. Improve: Clearer writing. Take more time with problems.

Did a very good job in teaching the material. Improve: Speak more clearly, and use neater handwriting. Engaging and encourages participation. Improve: Needs to write clearer (especially when solving equations), and go slower.

Always enthusiastic and uses demonstrations as explanations, which is helpful. Improve: Sometimes the lectures seem a little rushed and get confusing. He tends to challenge us by truly assessing which of my aspects are flawed. Improve: Please give us extra credit.

He’s great. One of the best instructors I’ve had at BU.

Was slow and thorough with problems. Improve: Neater handwriting. He really makes the class enjoyable. Improve: Clearer writing. Very enthusiastic and approachable. Genuinely cares about his students. Best professor at BU. Improve: Write

more clearly on board.

Improve: Goes a little bit quickly sometimes—tough with accent.

Cool experiments. Improve: Accent and handwriting.

Very smart and very funny. Hard physics but Val made the experience more enjoyable. Improve: He’s great. No

need to change.

He uses lots of demonstrations and examples. Very entertaining and enthusiastic. Improve: Please attempt to

write neater—please.

Great interest in students. Improve: Could be clearer in writing and organizing slides. Sometimes the notes are not clear and skip something. Great enthusiasm, demonstrations. Improve: Solve through the problem and give a number as an answer. Great teaching style, and encourages thinking. Improve: Volume.

Very good at teaching, clear and knows how to explain things. Improve: More jokes—you’re very funny.

Russian spy. Knows his stuff. Very helpful in office hours. Improve: English. Great professor and very enthusiastic. Improve: Slow down a little. Strong: Clear explanations, very good lecturer, nice. Good at engaging and presenting experiments.

About the Course: ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Good models, liked WebAssign, and liked the lecture room. Improve: Meeting five times a week is a little tiring.

Hard class made somewhat easier or more manageable because of Mr. V. Improve: Lab is the worst part of this

course—long, confusing, and not helpful for exams.

Very easy to understand and grasp concepts (even at the faster pace). Improve: Shorter labs (deriving formulas is long, boring, and in my opinion, unnecessary).

Organized, well thought out, and easy to think of.

Improve: Lab was weak—did not understand its purpose most times. I liked the daily lectures.

Straightforward course. Improve: So hard to get an A.

Good pace and good amount of time introducing every topic. Improve: Labs—too long and sometimes not very

useful. Offer course that meets four days a week. Challenging course. Covers all necessary topics. Improve: Lab time should be reduced. Learn a lot in a very short time, but definitely able to master material and be comfortable in physics. Lectures were interesting, exams were decent, and homework helped a lot. Improve: Felt the labs were more

challenging then needed and provided me with little improvement on the course material. Overall, they didn’t

really help me with the course. Summer course is fast paced, but worth taking with Mr. V. Super easy.

Provides lots of office hours to learn. Classes are provided online for review purposes.

It’s challenging but not anything impossible.

Labs are too long and sometimes we are expected to do labs before we learn the material in class. Tests are extremely fair. Homework and textbook are very helpful. Improve: The tests are very close to the homework and I feel the course may benefit from changing this. I felt

like I needed more of a challenge. Straightforward schedule. Improve: Number of hours, discussion section, and shorter labs. Fun and challenging. Strong: Exams are similar to homework. Improve: Labs are not interesting. He explains things clearly and labs are helpful. Improve: Labs are too long. Interesting. Improve: The labs are too long, and the time to take his tests is too short. I thought the tests were extremely fair. I liked the problems taught and I thought the material on the test was

covered in class. Improve: Not having new material introduced the day before the test. Strong: Fast paced. Improve: Office hours conflicting with lab sections is a problem. Physics is fun due to this class. Improve: Please, more make-up work.

Exams weren’t cumulative, but needed to know previous material in order to do well.

Covers essentials. Very good. Not difficult for someone not good at math. I love the grading. It helps me focus on what is most important about the class: the exams. Improve: Neater

notes and less stressful labs. Very good use of experiments. Teaches what needs to be known in a clear/understanding manner. Improve: Learn material faster (by one day

so we can have review).

Improve: Questions are sometimes confusing. Online book doesn’t help much.

Improve: Fast pace. Clear and interesting.

Improve: Suggest a discussion and shorter labs—TFs in lab essentially teach a discussion in addition to the lab,

seems like a waste of time.

Student Comments:

About the Instructor: ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Very fair exams/assignments. Improve: Grading scale. A is 95+. Almost impossible in an already hard class.

Clear and funny. Helpful outside of class/available often in office hours. Fair grader. Improve: Hard handwriting to read. Nice demonstrations. Improve: Handwriting. Class sequential steps. Great at using real life examples and experiments. Great instructor, fun/interesting demonstrations. Very knowledgeable. Very enthusiastic and funny. Improve: More clear writing. Clear, easy to understand. Awesome guy. Loved being in his class. Improve: Could not ask for anything more from a PY105/106

course/prof.

Very enthusiastic. Eager to explain/discuss. Interesting. Improve: Unclear about grading (some mistakes—of course this may be the TA’s responsilibity). Not always easy to understand.

I liked the demonstrations and experiments done in class. Very enthusiastic. Improve: Material for test three is rushed. He brushes off questions and is not helpful.

Mr. V is awesome. I love his humor and he’s very good at explaining concepts clearly. Improve: Write neater.

Maybe speak a little slower sometimes too.

Great enthusiasm. Great teacher. Humorous, able to generate interest. Improve: Denote the answers on the Powerpoint slides.

Enthusiastic professor. Improve: The Powerpoint presentations could be more organized.

I can honestly say I had never seen a professor who cared more for his students and how they do, as well as what they learn. He would email about material every day, answer questions promptly; even corrected a few exam questions himself to make sure that we got all the points we deserved. Who does that? He is an amazing professor. Improve: If someone asks a question, he could improve in the way he organizes his answer to make sure the person asking ends up understanding better.

Great dry humor. Really understands the material. Wonderful at experiments/demonstrations. Improve: In office hours being more clear and specific about how to solve WebAssign problems. Sometimes suggestions are too general and not as helpful as they could be.

Strong: Enthusiasm. Demonstrations. Funny. Improve: Handwriting.

Fair grading scale. Improve: Difficult to understand and follow lecture slides.

Session: Summer 2, 2014
Instructor: Valentin Voroshilov
Course: CAS PY106-B1 Elementary Physics 2

I think that the professor took more time with material in the second half. I also found it helpful that he typed out the slides with calculations.

Improve: He can be condescending to students at times. Maybe being more patient as students ask questions. Professor V is an excellent professor and by far my favorite I have had in my three years at BU. It would be a delight to have him teaching here during the school year as well. Improve: Neater handwriting.

Very funny, knows his stuff, clear/helpful.

Great help in office hours. Very understanding, always helpful. Improve: Make the slides a little more clear. Don’t

work all over the page. Explains in simple clear terms. Solves problems which help make problems more practical. Improve: Handwriting. He is a master. I think all professors should be able to teach as him. That way students would not have to spend

hours reading off of lectures. He goes through questions in class on the topics. Improve: He should continue improving his handwriting.

Enthusiastic. Funny. Improve: Sometimes, too many demonstrations—get carried away with them, although

most are good. Seemed agitated at times. Gets side-tracked often/rambles on really simple points. He cracked great jokes. Improve: Writing (Could it at least be legible). Enthusiasm (he seems bored). Very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Strong: Interest in students. Improve: His English. Can barely understand him and his notes and slides are a

mess.

He’s enthusiastic and nice but spends too long explaining simple concepts and not long enough explaining hard

concepts. I like the presentations he does in class.

About the Course: ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Fair course; learned a lot.

Labs are fun. WebAssign very helpful. Strong: Fair. Improve: Lab. Interesting course. Strong: Demonstrations. Strong: Very very easy if one has prior experience in PY courses.

Great course and interesting material. Improve: The labs sometimes feel like a waste of time and don’t always

help me understand concepts better. Sometimes they actually confuse me. Thorough in topics covered. Well-paced despite the course being compacted in time.

Strong: Covers all the material. Improve: Rush through topics. Need a slower pace. Organization of material is superb. Lab TAs are excellent, super helpful, always making sure everyone

understands. Professor really really cares about his students’ success and learning. This is a very special,

conscious professor, aware of his work and its impact. Improve: More patience when answering questions. Organizing the answers better. Loved it, great summer experience. Easy to participate in class with clicker. Improve: Providing more material in conjunction with textbook. Strong: Good pace. Quickness in grading.

Strong: Difficulty of the course fair. Homework, lab, and attendance help boost exam grades. I found the tests challenging. I liked that the homework and lab counted for a lot. Improve: Sometimes the tests were too challenging.

Strong: Good slides. Good clicker questions. Fast-paced, straightforward. Strong: His knowledge of the subject, his ability to teach us. Improve: The labs are too long. Great course. Improve: Decrease labs. They are too long. Improve: Labs are very frustrating. Too much time is spent attempting to decipher what the lab manual is trying

to have us do. Labs need to be more instructed as often we only first deal with that subject matter that morning. WebAssign is great practice. Well-spaced out for a six week course. Improve: Exams. The grading system is fair. The lab manual needs to be improved at least for the summer. There should be more pictures that illustrate how

to set up labs for people who may not have done this before. I like that homework and attendance factors into the grade. Improve: The TAs in my section were pretty horrible. One was very helpful, but one never knew what was going on and always explained things incorrectly and was not helpful at all.
